Week 9 Thing 7 (Foiled in a Felony Attempt)

Confused Library Patron Attempts to Shield His Thoughts from being 'Checked Out'

The following link is an article from the ALA regarding RFID Technology for Libraries. To summarize: RFID means Radio Frequency IDentification. I find it all kind of shocking. The point I put in red text led to some amusing fantasies. Thus the picture above.

  • Refers to microchips placed on books that track them throughout the library system by radio waves making circulation procedures and inventory much more streamlined.
  • Does not require line of sight or fixed plane to read tags and replaces older systems that do require these features.
  • Used for theft protection.
  • Reads faster for faster processing of materials
  • Allows automated handling of materials with conveyor and sorting systems.
  • The tags last a long time.
  • Wrapping your book in aluminum foil would allow you to bypass the system and, in libraries using RFID, carrying aluminum foil onto the premises would constitute premeditated theft.
  • Savy patrons could also by-pass the system by carrying their books in such a way that the tags rub together.
